Stylish new apartments in Toorak

I've said in the past that I will never move back into an apartment, but I would consider making an exception for this lovely space by Chamberlain Javens Architects in one of my favourite Melbourne suburbs, Toorak.

Our wedding: getting ready

We picked up our official wedding photos yesterday and I've spent most of today sorting through them and designing an album for my in-laws.  For now, here are a few of my getting ready shots.

A black house

One day I'd like to live in a simple black timber panelled house.  I love this ski chalet by AKB.

Looking up

Beautiful ceilings in the National Gallery of Victoria and Melbourne Central... pity about the weather last weekend.

Confessions of a shopaholic: week 3

Three days in Melbourne last weekend meant I ate way too much... brunches, coffee, crêpes from La Petite Crêperie, chocolates from Haigh's, fries from Lord of the Fries, cocktails, Indian food, Vietnamese food... the list goes on.  My shopping however, was very controlled, especially compared to previous trips to Australia's fashion capital.

I decided to keep a list of things I found and wanted to buy.  When I read through it later, I learned that I didn't really want any of those things.  I guess what they say about sleeping on it really does work.

I'm into the combo of black and metallics at the moment, so I bought a black knitted jumper with gold stripes from Portmans and a black v-neck jumper with silver flecks from Guess.

I also bought black suede booties from Leona Edmiston...

Baroque Bistro, The Rocks

Tuesday was our one-month anniversary as Mr & Mrs.  We celebrated with an amazing six-course degustation dinner (with matching wines of course) at Baroque Bistro in The Rocks.  The food was delicious and the staff were lovely and remembered us from our dinner there the night before our wedding which was nice.  They also gave us a box of five precious Baroque macarons to take home with us.

Beetroot - baby beetroot roasted in hay, sour onions, goat cheese, radish

Scampi - sautéed, white celery purée, grapes, Marcona almonds, bottarga

Pork - smoked pork cheek, red cabbage, apple, turnips, mustard

Snapper - steamed with clams, fennel, red capsicum, roast scallop consommé

Quail - roasted crown with a confit of the legs, celeriac, savoy cabbage, boudin noir, blackcurrant

Pineapple - caramelised with coconut, meringue, toffee and passionfruit

Confessions of a shopaholic: week 2

It seems the guilt trip worked and I was very good this week... which makes for a very boring post, so here are a few little things on my wishlist right now.

The only thing I did buy for myself this week was that Laura Ashley beaded top I mentioned last week.  Next Friday, Harry and I are heading to Melbourne for three days.  He'll be at a convention for most of the weekend, so I'll have three days mostly to myself to shop and eat.  You can be assured next week's shopping diary will be much more interesting.

Craving black

I'm craving black tonight, maybe because I wore this bright pink dress today instead of my usual black on black.

Confessions of a shopaholic: week 1 continued

Uh oh... I wasn't so good yesterday. I went grocery shopping and bought silver skinny jeans and a black fitted top from SABA and a clutch / travel wallet from Oroton. Luckily an evacuation alarm went off just as I was about to try on a cute black beaded top at Laura Ashley.

Here's my loot from SABA.

I promise I'll try to do better next week.

My weekend

This wasn't a particularly productive weekend. I managed a couple of sleep-ins, a little shopping and not a lot of housework. I was a warm lap for a puppy with a sore leg for a lot of the weekend. Although I did spend a little time today tidying up and rearranging things in the bedroom.

New desks for our home office

We need new desks for our home office. They will face each other in the centre of the room so they must be the same for a clean look. Harry's only request was that they be height adjustable; being a software engineer he spends a lot of time at his desk and the standard height is not the most ergonomic.

Most adjustable height desks are quite boring, designed for personality-less commercial office spaces, not for the home. I've decided our best option is the FINNVARD adjustable trestle legs from IKEA in either white (combined with a timber table top) or birch (combined with a white table top). So now the only thing left to do is make that decision.

We currently have white walls and a horrible beige carpeted floor in our home office, so I was leaning towards the first option as it would provide a better contrast against both. The only problem is the timber table top is currently out of stock with no estimated return date and I am very impatient, so I'm considering changing my mind just so I don't have to wait.

There is a third option to buy a NUMERAR kitchen worktop and cut it in half (it's 2.5m long), similar to the picture below.  It's also reversible so we could choose a white or dark grey top.

What do you think? Also, we're likely to be tearing up the carpet and replacing it with white bamboo flooring from IKEA in the short term, then eventually taking that back up and restoring the original boards (or if we find they are in a very bad condition I'm hoping to lay new herringbone timber floors in their place).

Slogan tees and sweaters

I've never been one to wear clothing with slogans or anything where the brand name is too prominent. Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive brand snob, but I don't like flashing it.

Anyway, I think my attitude towards slogans changed with the purchase of my 'Pardon My French' tee from Kate Spade. I love it and since then I've also bought a 'Mrs' tee from Kate Spade and a 'Meow' sweater from Wildfox.

Here are a few of my favourite slogan tees and sweaters at the moment: a beaded tee from Witchery (I'm certain this will be in my closet very soon)...

Confessions of a shopaholic: week 1

This Monday marked the start of a new year for those of us working in the finance industry, so it's the perfect time to make a financial new year's resolution. Mine is to shop less! I was so good for so long, but I think all the money we spent on our wedding made me a little crazy and I have been shopping far too much lately, so I'm restarting my "confessions of a shopaholic" posts to hopefully guilt me into spending less. How have I done in my first week so far (with three days left)?

From Scandinavian Design Center, I bought a Muuto E27 pendant light in rose (although the cost of this doesn't count because we were given the money to buy it as a wedding gift from our registry). The problem is that I didn't stop there, I also bought a set of Menu bottle grinders (these were left on our registry and I really wanted them)...

...and two Marimekko Pallo coffee cups.

I also bought three Moleskine photo albums from Milk Books. I was planning on buying two of these to fill with our favourite photos from our wedding as a gift for my parents and Harry's parents. We don't receive our official wedding photos for another few weeks, but the albums were less than half price for a couple of days only on Living Social so it made sense to buy them this week.

My total spend for the week so far (excluding the Muuto lamp) is a little over $200. Let's just say that's progress from last week and leave it at that.

A pretty Parisian courtyard

This lovely home is a converted old printing factory in the heart of Paris.  I love the pretty internal courtyard and the fact that the bench seating in the stylish grey kitchen is mirrored with a matching set-up in the garden.

New season looks from Jigsaw and Marcs

I received new season emails from both Jigsaw and Marcs today.  Jigsaw's Spring Summer 2013 pre collection features warm pink pieces inspired by sophisticated 60s icon Jackie O and Marcs continues the monochrome trend with graphic pieces in black and white.  I love the looks pictured below.
